Trustee Molly McGinty-Tauren, O.D.

Molly McGinty-TaurenMolly McGinty-Tauren was selected to serve on the ABCMO Board to help ensure alignment with the professional career concerns of younger optometry practitioners. She is a member of the medical staff and an attending optometrist at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center. There she directs the student externship program for optometry students, serves as a collaborating member of the medical center’s optometry residency program in ocular disease, and holds faculty appointments at the affiliated optometry schools.

She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 1998 and her OD degree in 2002 from the New England College of Optometry. She completed a VA residency in ocular disease in 2003 and spent a year with a private ophthalmology practice before her appointment at the VA Medical Center. She resides in the greater Kalamazoo area with her husband and two young children.

Certification Requirements

The following are in addition to an O.D. degree from an accredited North American school or college of optometry and a current state license to practice.

Residency: Completion of a full-time, ACOE (or equivalent) accredited, postgraduate clinical residency training program having major emphasis on medical optometry.

ACMO Exam: Passage of the Advanced Competence in Medical Optometry exam (or equivalent) offered by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry.

Practice: Documented significant practice of medical optometry for a minimum of two years immediately prior to application for certification.

The Practice requirement is waived in the two years immediately following residency training.

Advanced Competence in Medical Optometry Exam

The next Advanced Competence in Medical Optometry exam will be administered at over 220 U.S. Pearson VUE Professional Centers on Friday, June 21, 2019.
