American Board of Certification in Medical Optometry

Vice President Peter A. Lalle, O.D.

Peter LalleDr. Lalle was awarded the Bachelor in Arts degree in 1974 from the University of Virginia, the O.D. degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1978 and completed residency training in hospital based optometry in 1980 at the Fort Howard and Baltimore VA hospitals in association with the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Asked to join the medical staff after residency, he has developed a comprehensive system of eye and outpatient eye clinics within the VA Maryland Health Care System that include optometry residency and externship programs and a cadre of clinical staff for which he serves as chief administrative officer and senior optometrist.

He has received two VA Commendation Awards for Performance, the Outstanding Faculty Externship Award, The Case of the Month award from Hahnemann Hospital’s Department of Ophthalmology and, as a student, the Clinical Excellence Award and was Chair of the Student Optometric Service to Haiti 1976-78.

Dr. Lalle has authored 24 peer-reviewed publications, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and Member of its Glaucoma Diplomate Subcommittee, Treasurer of the Optometric Glaucoma Society, Item Writer for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry, Member of the American Optometric Association, the National Association of VA Optometrists and the Armed Forces Optometric Association. He holds faculty appointments at three schools of optometry, serves as referee for AOA and AAO journal publications and is a Member of the POAG Practice Guideline working group. He and his wife reside in Phoenix, Maryland.

Certification Requirements

The following are in addition to an O.D. degree from an accredited North American school or college of optometry and a current state license to practice.

Residency: Completion of a full-time, ACOE (or equivalent) accredited, postgraduate clinical residency training program having major emphasis on medical optometry.

ACMO Exam: Passage of the Advanced Competence in Medical Optometry exam (or equivalent) offered by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry.

Practice: Documented significant practice of medical optometry for a minimum of two years immediately prior to application for certification.

The Practice requirement is waived in the two years immediately following residency training.
